Places to Go in November in the USA

November is the one month when the US offers three different trips at once. The summer crowds have dispersed, the peak holiday rush hasn’t arrived, and the weather across much of the country is pleasantly mild. You still have to choose among late-season color, real warmth, and an early start on the holidays.

Pick the climate first, and the rest falls into place.

Key takeaways
  • Leaf season in the South runs later, with Louisiana state parks peaking from late October to mid-November.
  • Hawaii’s shoulder-season hotel rates are cheapest in early November and after Thanksgiving.
  • New York City ranked as the top domestic Thanksgiving destination according to Allianz Partners.
  • The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes place on Thursday, November 26.

Where the leaves are still turning

Leaf season doesn’t stop on October 31. The farther south you go, the later leaf-peeping season starts. By Nov. 1, the trees along the Lake of the Ozarks’ 1,150 miles of shoreline are expected to be a riot of color. Lexington, Kentucky, is expected to peak in the middle of November, and Louisiana’s state parks run from late October through mid-November. That is a lot of foliage for travelers who missed the New England rush.

Western North Carolina is the obvious base. Asheville’s lower elevation means fall foliage lingers into mid-November along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and cabins with fireplaces are easy to find.

The Great Smoky Mountains, though, are a case where the sources disagree. One roundup argues that November brings many fewer visitors while still having great fall foliage to admire. Another says peak color arrives in mid-October and by late November the show is over, and so are the leaf-season crowds. My read: go in the first half of the month if color matters to you, and the second half if you’d rather have empty trails and lower prices.

Cheaper lodging is the other draw. In Gatlinburg, the crowds from October’s peak foliage have dispersed, reducing lodging costs dramatically. Eureka Springs, Arkansas, tucked into the Ozarks, pairs winding streets, Victorian architecture, and art galleries with off-season rates, which makes it a good pre-Thanksgiving escape.

Where it still feels like summer

Hawaii is the safe bet. Flights and accommodations to Hawai’i are cheapest in early November and after Thanksgiving, and on Maui whale season begins in late November. You get warm water and shoulder-season hotel rates.

Closer to the mainland, Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, Southern Arizona, and parts of Texas stay comfortably warm through the month. One late-November forecast table puts San Diego in the upper 60s and sunny, and Scottsdale in the low 70s. That is hiking and patio weather, not swimsuit weather, so pack accordingly. Key West and the Florida Keys fit the swimsuit version better.

Skip the Thanksgiving week premium.

The desert deserves a second look too. Sedona’s red rock trails see fewer visitors once the heat breaks, and the cooler temperatures make a morning on Cathedral Rock or Devil’s Bridge far more comfortable than in summer. Phoenix and Scottsdale make easy long-weekend flights from most of the West.

Cities that start the holidays early

New York is the standout, and the travel-insurance numbers agree. New York City ranked as the top domestic Thanksgiving destination according to Allianz Partners. Go before the parade crowds and you can kick off the holiday season without the heavy December crowds, with skating at Bryant Park’s Winter Village and the Met and MoMA as backup when the weather turns.

The 2026 parade is a milestone. The 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is set for Thursday, November 26, and if you’re staying, Central Park hits its peak fall color right around the holiday.

Prefer something slower? Savannah and San Antonio both reward November walking. In Savannah, the hot and humid weather starts to dissipate, which makes the Historic District and River Street pleasant again. San Antonio has the River Walk, and early in the month, you can celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. Later in the month its holiday lights go up along the water.

On the Jersey Shore, Cape May transforms into a Victorian winter wonderland in November. A trolley ride past the decorated houses takes about as long as a coffee.

New Orleans works year-round, but check the calendar. The Bayou Classic falls on 27 and 28 November, and hotels near the Superdome fill early and cost more. Come the week before and you get the food, the music and the mild weather without the stadium crowd.

Timing the month around Thanksgiving

The calendar matters more than the destination. Travel before Thanksgiving for lower prices and lighter crowds; Thanksgiving week itself is one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the year. A trip in the first or second week of November can cost noticeably less than the same trip two weeks later, even at the same hotel.

The exception is the places that empty out when everyone else is traveling. In the Hamptons, oceanfront properties that book months in advance in July are available with real flexibility in late November. Beach towns off-season, from Long Island to the Carolinas, can be a bargain precisely because they feel closed to everyone else.

A practical note for anyone heading to a national park late in the month: some roads and facilities change on a seasonal schedule. One Thanksgiving guide flags seasonal cut-offs in Zion and the Great Smoky Mountains on 28 and 29 November, so check the park’s own page before you book a lodge.

One more detail if you’re in Manhattan on the 26th: the parade fills the morning, so book any holiday meal for the afternoon or evening.
